FSSAI stands for food safety and standard authority of India which is an officially recognized independent organization under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare that operates by the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006 and whose mission is to license, register, and manage food business operators in India.
FSSAI has sets of rules and Regulations under food safety standard under 2011 to guarantee the quality of products. In order to prevent contamination and unethical actions in the food business, it monitors food testing standards and methods for testing.

According to the FSS Act of 2006, the FSSAI issues a 14-digit uniform numbering license and registration to all operators of food businesses. This registration number must be printed on all food products as it provides.
According to sections 31(1) and 31(2) of the FSS ACT, 2006, obtaining an online FSSAI registration is a mandatory requirement for all food business operators (FBO) in order to operate a legal food business in India.
The FSSAI Registration Process
Step-1 Online Application: Depending on the nature of their business, FBOs are required to register for the Online FSSAI on FosCos. Then pay the FSSAI registration fee and upload the required documents.
They will receive an application reference number when the submission is successful, which they can use to track the application’s status.
Step-2 Inspection by FSSAI authorities: The building will be thoroughly examined by the FSSAI food safety officer to make sure that all applicable regulations and food safety guidelines are being followed.
Step 3: Approval clearance: Verification comes once the business premise and document have been properly examined. The Food Safety Officer will approve the FSSAI registration or license and inform the appropriate licensing authorities.
Step 4: License issuance: After approval is granted, the FSSAI will provide a unique 14-digit registration number that must be printed on every product and displayed during business hours.
Required Documents for FASSI Registration (Food License)
General required documents for basic FSSAI registration.
- Address proof such as Aadhar card, driving license, PAN card of Authorized person
- Passport size photo

- Details of directors/ proprietors and executive members
- PAN and bank details

- Form-B Duly completed and signed by the proprietors, partners, or authorized signatory
- A copy of the certificate issued under COOP-ACT, 1861/multistate COOP-ACT, 2002 in case of cooperatives
- Partnership deed/ memorandum and article of association toward the constitution of the firm
- Processing unit layout plan with dimensions in square meters per unit (required for manufacturing and processing units only)

- Complete detailed list of directors, proprietors, and executive members of society or trust.
- List of all the machines and equipment along with name, description, installed capacity and horsepower
- Analysis Report on the chemical and bacteriological when water is used as an ingredient.

FSSAI Registration Renewal
It is equally necessary to renew your FSSAI registration as it is to obtain a new registration. The license is granted for a period of 1 to 5 years. Therefore, 90 days prior to the due date, all operators of food businesses must file for an FSSAI renewal.
According to regulations, FBOs who fail to renew their FSSAI registration would be considered unable to open for business.

What is FoSCoS-FSSAI?
FosCoS stands for food safety compliance system, it’s an online portal, introduced in 2020 by FSSAI to facilitate the licensing and registration process for FBOs. It is an improved version of the Food Licensing and Registration System (FLRS).
Purpose of FosCos FSSAI
- Permits the application to seed business-specific information, such as the CIN No., PAN No, and GST No, in order to ensure the validation and 360-degree profiling of FBOs.
- Improve the user performance of the application and simplify the application process to encourage FBOs to do business more easily.
- Reduce the amount of physical documentation and optimize FBOs’ online application business process flows.

Classification of FSSAI registration/license and Eligibility in India
Food business operators (FBOs) are required to register with the Basic FSSAI using form-A if their yearly turnover is less than 12 LPA (lakh per year).
For example, small-scale merchants, ice cream vendors, street hawkers, and independent food manufacturer and sellers.
Food business operators (FBOs) need a state license from the FSSAI using form B if their annual turnover is greater than 12LPA but less than 20cr.
For example, retailers, small and medium-sized businesses, storage facilities, and transporters.
Food business operators (FBOs) operating in multiple states and with an annual revenue exceeding 20cr are required to get an FSSAI central license for their head office through form-B, and to register each of their other branches separately according to with state regulations.

NOTE: Despite of their annual turnover, marketers and manufacturers should have a state license or central license according to the type of their FBOs.

FSSAI State License is required for the manufacturers and marketers if their yearly turnout limit is less than 12 lakhs.
After receiving a notice of improvement, you must implement the recommendations for improvement provided by the appropriate authority. You must have at least 14 days to submit your compliance report to the relevant authority.
Under Sections 32(4) and 32(5) of the FSS Act, 2006, any person who disagrees with a decision made by the Licensing/Registering Authority may file an appeal with the Commissioner of Food Safety, whose decision is final. You have 15 days from the day that you received notification of the decision to file such an appeal. You have 15 days, or the date on the notice, to file an appeal of a notice of improvement, whichever comes first.
If the required information is not provided within the allotted 30-day period, or if the licensing officer determines that the application is not tenable and cannot be granted, the application will be denied. An application will be given the chance to be considered before a license is refused, and the reasons for rejection will be recorded in writing.
The department will penalize a food firm that operates without an FSSAI registration.
The FSSAI license is granted for a period of 1 to 5 years, dependent upon the requirements of the company.
In case that your FSSAI registration is not renewed on time, you will be charged ₹100 fine every day till it is renewed.
FSSAI Basic Registration: If small food companies expect annual revenues of up to Rs. 12 lakhs, they may choose to register with the FSSAI Basic registration.
